The short version: this site collects almost nothing, sells nothing, and has no advertising or third-party trackers on it.
What is collected
Server logs
The web server records each request: IP address, timestamp, the page requested, browser user agent, and referring page. These logs are used to keep the site running and to spot abuse. They are rotated and deleted after 30 days.
Comments
If you leave a comment, the name, email address, and website you enter are stored, along with your IP address and browser user agent — this is how WordPress works and how spam filtering functions. Your email address is never displayed publicly and never used to contact you about anything other than your comment. Comments are kept indefinitely unless you ask me to remove yours.
Cookies
If you leave a comment, WordPress may set cookies storing your name, email, and site so you do not have to retype them. They last about a year and you can decline or delete them in your browser with no loss of function. If you log in — which only I do — session cookies are set. There are no analytics, advertising, or cross-site tracking cookies.
What is not collected
- No analytics service, first- or third-party.
- No advertising network, and no ad or affiliate tracking.
- No embedded fonts, scripts, or media loaded from third-party CDNs.
- No newsletter, so no mailing list to be on.
- Nothing is ever sold, rented, or shared with a data broker.
Embedded content from other sites
Posts occasionally embed content such as a video from another site. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited that site directly, and the other site may collect data about you. I avoid embeds where a plain link will do.
Your rights
You can ask me for a copy of any personal data I hold about you — in practice, your comments — and you can ask me to delete it. Write to the address on the contact page and I will do it, usually within a few days. No account or verification hoop required beyond confirming you control the email address on the comment.
Hosting and security
The site runs on a rented virtual server and is served over HTTPS. Backups are encrypted and kept for 30 days. If a breach ever exposed comment data, I would post about it here.
